BALL STATE UNIVERSITY
Fall 2024 CS 120: Computer Science 1
Twenty-third Semi-annual All-section Art Show
Sponsored by the Department of Computer Science

Held in the AJ Atrium on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

The collages shown below were created by students in the CS 120 course, and judged by their peers to be the best in each section of the course. Although these could have been created using an image-editing program, these students have written the code themselves to create these collages programmatically by manipulating individual pixels.

This page displays the entries from this semester. You may view entries from all other semesters. All student work included in this and other shows, as well as many other CS 120 students' work is provided in an online digital media repository maintained by the BSU University Libraries.

"The void" by Ark Agunbiade
Freshman; Computer and Information Technology major
agunbiadeark.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose the design largely based on the original image being something I found pretty. So, I decided to simply add onto it with my modifications. The hardest part was deciding where all the pieces would look best in the final image. Being able to run the code and having it come out looking pretty good was the most satisfying part."

"Celestial dissonance" by Jovan Dukes
Freshman; Computer Science major
dukesjovan.jpg
Artist's statement: "I set out to create an ethereal image that would capture the feeling of a gateway between the real world and the spiritual realm. The most challenging part of the process was selecting the right picture to alter; with so many options, each image felt like it needed a unique approach to bring out the mystical, otherworldly quality I envisioned. Ultimately, I found one that was especially suited to my concept, making it the easiest to modify compared to the others. The experience was incredibly rewarding, not only because I brought my vision to life but also because my work received recognition in the competition. This acknowledgment made all the effort feel worthwhile and inspired me to keep exploring creative projects like this."

"conCATenation" by Aiden McKenzie
Freshman; Applied Cybersecurity major
mckenzieaiden.jpg
Artist's statement: "I just wanted to share a funny picture of my cat, and it turned into a pretty cool looking piece. The most difficult process was the function for creating the wavy effect. Seeing it all come together in the end had to have been the most rewarding aspect of creating the collage."

"Bananas" by William McRoberts
Freshman; Computer Science major
mcrobertswilliam.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose the simplicity and random object as a sort of satire on modern art. I found making sure everything was where it was supposed to be to be the most difficult part. The most rewarding part of this project was overcoming certain problems and learning new ways to solve problems."

"Virtruvio" by Beckett Neal
Freshman; Applied Cyber Security major, Japanese minor
nealbeckett.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose the design based on a favorite art piece of mine, an original painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. The most challenging aspect was the coding of math that allowed me to copy and paste the pixels of the arms in a rotated format. Seeing the rotation code work was very rewarding, as it took a very. Very. Very. Long time to get to work."

"Fire Spear Dance" by Lexi Probst
Freshman; Anthropology major
probstlexi.jpg
Artist's statement: "I decided on the usage of a drawing I made for Rain World Art Month 2024, as the character featured has a bright coloration, but it has a dark background that can be used to make contrast. Also, the titular fire spear is good for guiding the viewer's eye. I found figuring out how to get the edge detection properly calibrated for the outlines that appear was the most difficult part. However, it was ultimately the most rewarding part as well because it makes such a cool visual effect."

"Error: Corrupted File" by Jacob Shopher
Freshman; Computer Science major
shopherjacob.jpg
Artist's statement: "I wanted to create a collage that ended up looking glitched or corrupted through the modifications we learned. The most challenging part in doing this was creating the alternating horizontal offset, it was really hard to wrap my head around how to create it. Seeing the picture I had in my mind come to life as I worked through it progressively was really rewarding."

"Cathedral of the Colorful Kitty" by Jack Wagner
Freshman; Computer Science major
wagnerjack.jpg
Artist's statement: "I wanted to combine 3D illusions with the look of stained glass, giving it a unique mix of modern and classic styles. Figuring out how to code layers that cast realistic shadows for depth was challenging. The most rewarding part was watching the cat slowly take shape as the layers of complexity rendered. Seeing it finally come together was so satisfying!"
