The collages shown below were created by students in the CS 120 course, and judged by a panel of faculty (CS and non-CS), administrators, and CS 222: Advanced Programming students to be the best in the show. Prior to the event, they were judged by their peers to be the best in each section of the course. Although these could have been created using an image-editing program, these students have written the code themselves to create these collages programmatically by manipulating individual pixels.
This page displays the entries from this semester. You may view entries from all other semesters. All student work included in this and other shows, as well as many other CS 120 students' work is provided in an online digital media repository maintained by the BSU University Libraries.

"Colorful Colorado"
by Hattie Sparks Senior at the Indiana Academy (plans to major in electrical engineering) |
![]() |
Artist's statement: "When designing this collage, I found a picture my mom had taken in Colorado. I used the photo, along with my family’s history with the state, as inspiration to reflect my own Colorado memories. I wanted to capture the various colors and art forms that I discovered during family trips to Colorado. The part that I found most challenging about creating the collage was developing the posterization code as it needed to be very specific for different luminances. The most rewarding part was getting the different posterizations and color changes to work. I believe that the various details display the image how I envisioned it." |

"A New Form"
by Maddie Villella Sophomore; Data Analytics major, GIScience minor |
![]() |
Artist's statement: "I chose this design because I really liked the color scheme and I knew I wanted to manipulate the colors of the picture I chose so that there is a prominent appearance of transformation. I found putting the picture of the collage in the right position on the canvas, and figuring out where I wanted to place them to be the most challenging part of the creating the collage. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was seeing the final product, I really liked how all the different modification turned out." |

"A Linc to my Past"
by Evan Lehr Sophomore; Music Media Production major |
![]() |
Artist's statement: "I chose this design because I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to make. I ended up choosing to make a collage with pictures of my dog because I don't get to see him as often as I used to. The most challenging part was working out exactly which pixels I needed to place the pictures on for the collage to line up properly. The most rewarding part was seeing the finished collage, and everything being neatly put together." |

"Waterfall" by Jaylah Lewis Freshmen; Data Analytics major ![]() Artist's statement: "I chose this design for my collage because I wanted something that was simple but still very interesting to look at. One of my main focuses on this piece was the symmetry in each section I wanted to make sure that it was just right. The most challenging part about creating my collage was getting the colors just right in blocks three and five. This took me a while because I needed to find the right values in my function to get the colors right. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was seeing everything that I had worked on for hours finally come to life, just like how I imagined." |
"America the Beautiful" by Missy Riegle Senior at the Indiana Academy (plans to major in electrical/computer engineering) ![]() Artist's statement: "I chose the design because there is so much variety in the different symbols that represent America and I wanted to create a collage to display that. The most challenging part about creating the college was combining all the little functions into one large one that would actually create the collage. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was when I finally got it to run and saw it displayed and that it looked exactly like I wanted it to." |
"Home, no matter what" by Hunter Willis Junior; Astronomy/astrophysics major ![]() Artist's statement: "I choose this design as I wanted to show my friend's artwork and show the world that we all created together in our time playing D&D. This is the planned home of our characters and as this group has been such a safe space for me, I wanted to show that they will always be a place I can run to, just like a home. The most challenging part was probably just figuring out what modifications I wanted to do for each image as I wanted to pick something eye catching but still possible with the limited knowledge I possess. The most rewarding part had to be seeing each section work after I created them, specifically the night sky and it's randomization aspect." |

"llAmA" by Pierson Silver Sophomore; Computer Science major ![]() Artist's statement: "I chose this design because it fit the requirements to get an A. Making the diagonal lines for the A and M was the most challenging. My reward came when I got the letters working." |
"Glitched Paradise" by Eric Segbor Senior; Meteorology/Climatology major, Geographic Information Science minor ![]() Artist's statement: "I chose this design because I felt it would make the picture stand out and by manipulating the same picture over and over again, it led to something very unique in the end. For others, I would want them to know that this was something took a lot of experimenting to make the picture look mysterious and fascinating at the same time. The most the challenging thing about the project was adding the signature to it. The most rewarding part was experimenting with different effects to make the canvas look pretty unique." |

Section 1"Love for nature"by Oyekunle Alabi Freshman; Computer Science and French majors |
![]() |
Artist's statement: "I chose a design that incorporates natural elements like water, a boat, and a building to reflect the theme of ‘love for nature.’ I want others to appreciate the beauty of nature and the peace that can be found in the outdoors. The most challenging part of creating the collage was finding the right images that fit together cohesively while maintaining a consistent color scheme. The most rewarding part was being able to express my love of nature and the outdoors through my art and creating a final product that I'm proud to share with others." |
Section 2"Atmosphere"by Alyssa Binkley Freshman; Meteorology major |
![]() |
Artist's statement: "I wanted something simple, yet effective. The most challenging part of creating the collage was deciding what picture to serve as my main image to be altered. The most rewarding part of the creating of the collage is I loved seeing all of the different pieces of the collage coming together when it was finally finished." |
