Judging Results of the Spring 2024 CS 120: Computer Science 1
Twenty-second Semi-annual All-section Art Show
Sponsored by the Department of Computer Science

Held in the AJ Atrium on Friday, March 29, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Eastern)

The collages shown below were created by students in the CS 120 course, and judged by a panel of faculty (CS and non-CS), administrators, and CS 222: Advanced Programming students to be the best in the show. Prior to the event, they were judged by their peers to be the best in each section of the course. Although these could have been created using an image-editing program, these students have written the code themselves to create these collages programmatically by manipulating individual pixels.

This page displays the entries from this semester. You may view entries from all other semesters. All student work included in this and other shows, as well as many other CS 120 students' work is provided in an online digital media repository maintained by the BSU University Libraries.

"Painted Wall" by Dylan Behne Sophomore; Computer Science major

Artist's statement: "I made this design because it was a picture I took of a popular graffiti wall in my hometown. I like the edits I used, especially the functions tha t made the picture look blocky. They are perhaps my favorite edits. Just making sure the collage was clean but still functional was the most challenging part yet, and also my favorite part. Getting to see the end results and getting to have others look at the work felt really nice but being able to look at the code I wrote, knowing the time I put into it, made me happy."

"Flower Family" by Cory Paynes​ Freshman; Computer Science major

Artist's statement: "I wanted to find the perfect balance between looks and simplicity. I stuck to functions I was pretty familiar with. Adding my signature was a bit challenging; at first i wanted it in the bottom left but found it easier to leave it in the top left. Being voted to be in this art show was rewarding!"

"The Butler" by Emma Brotz Freshman; Computer Science major

Artist's statement: "I was very inspired by Andy Warhol for this collage and found it entertaining to customize the colors of my cat, Alfie. When he's not busy being the star of CS 120 collages, he spends his days lazily lounging, chomping ankles, and guarding his family from petrifying moths and water bowls. Adding my signature at the end was the most challenging part, as it took multiple days and many trials to do. The most rewarding part was finally figuring out my signature and making my collage complete. My dad supported me while I was working on it, and I'm excited for him to see the result. His smile will be the real reward. :)"

"Introduction to Computing and Programming in Python by Oliver Moster" by Oliver Moster Senior; Meteorology and Climatology major Artist's statement: "I chose the design of my collage because I wasn't going to be able to finish my original vision in the time given when I really started working on the project, thus I pivoted to my textbook cover. The most challenging part of this project was getting rid of the black background so that the seahorses could properly overlap. The most rewarding part of the creation was the final project, being able to look at something I made and say "hey that looks pretty close to what I was trying to replicate, alright let's send it in."

"British Invasion of France" by Reese Phillips Freshman; Computer Science major, Anthropology, History, and Math minors Artist's statement: "Big Ben is a great tall structure and I wanted to see it replace the Eiffel tower because I like it more. Finding the merge function and being ready to call it at the right spot was the hardest. I was rewarded to see the Eiffel tower gone, and Big Ben in its place."
