BALL STATE UNIVERSITY
Fall 2023 CS 120: Computer Science 1
Twenty-first Semi-annual All-section Art Show
Sponsored by the Department of Computer Science

Held in the AJ Atrium on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

The collages shown below were created by students in the CS 120 course, and judged by their peers to be the best in each section of the course. Although these could have been created using an image-editing program, these students have written the code themselves to create these collages programmatically by manipulating individual pixels.

This page displays the entries from this semester. You may view entries from all other semesters. All student work included in this and other shows, as well as many other CS 120 students' work is provided in an online digital media repository maintained by the BSU University Libraries.

"Tic-Tac-Cat" by Ethan Andreshak
Freshman; Applied Cybersecurity major
andreshakethan.jpg
Artist's statement: "I was just playing a game and I had an idea to do a tic-tac-toe type of design with different picture effects, honestly it just sounded like a good idea to me. Those two cats are my cats. Oreo and Peaches, you should be able to tell which is which. I found figuring out how to make the Xs and Os the most challenging, as we had never done anything like that in class before. The most rewarding part of the entire collage was seeing how vivid and striking my two cats were. I honestly did not expect the collage to look as bright as it did."

"biggestben.jpg" by Charles Dager
Freshman; Computer Science major
dagercharles.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose this design because I thought it would look cool. The most challenging part was adjusting the blur function so that it was blurry enough to tell the difference between the original. The most rewarding part was seeing the final product."

"Charlie" by Gabbi Fox
Sophomore; Graphic Design major; Computer Science minor
foxgabbi.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose this design to accentuate the playfulness of my Golden Retriever, puppy, Charlie. We adopted her this year and she takes up most of my time when I visit home. What I found the most challenging about this project was getting the copy function to work in the way that I wanted it to. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was when I finally got the copy function to work, and I saw my final product."

"Vivid Sentinel" by C.J. Fulciniti
Freshman; Computer Science major
fulciniticj.jpg
Artist's statement: "The reason I chose the design I did was to create a collage that is very colorful, despite my code actually removing color from the original picture. The hardest part about creating the collage was creating a function to write my signature on it. The most rewarding part was the fact that I created it mostly by myself. Being able to create something that looks so cool from just a starting image and computer code is not something I was sure I was capable of, but here we are!"

"Space ghost in pop" by Josh Giunchedi
Freshman; Applied Cybersecurity major
giunchedijosh.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose to do it like this to pay tribute to one of my favorite TV shows Space Ghost Coast to Coast, as well as one of my favorite artists, Andy Warhol, but with my own kind of spin. I found the most challenging part was figuring out how to work in the signature, along with the yellow cyan trope effect in the bottom right corner. The most rewarding part was definitely the end. It looked much better in person then I thought it was going to. And I’m super proud enough people liked it for it to make it this far in the competition."

"Shades of sky" by Kevin Mack
Freshman; Computer Science major; Business minor
mackkevin.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose the design of this collage since my favorite color is red so that's what I wanted to base it on and the sky is usually the most beautiful thing. Creating a chromakey name was just overall the most confusing part I couldn’t finish, but being able to see the finished result was satisfying, since I felt like my work paid off."

"Ideas are made of ideas" by Lleyton Parsons
Freshman; Computer Science major
parsonslleyton.jpg
Artist's statement: "The thought process of even coming up with ideas for things like this can be difficult, then I had a realization: Big ideas are all composed of smaller ones. The most challenging part was just coming up with the idea, and the troubleshooting bits. The satisfaction of watching it all come together completed was the reward."

"...Effect" by Adrian Perry
Freshman; Computer Science major
perrymadagan.jpg
Artist's statement: "I have a spiritual and personal connection with butterflies, as well as a sort of gentle feeling surrounding the color purple, and wanted to bring those both together to create something soft and beautiful. I think the most challenging part of creating the collage was fixing all the little issues with how I was trying to crop the pictures. The most rewarding part of making it was seeing people's reactions to the finished product, and the sense of pride I can feel because of it."

"Kikirikiki" by Favian Ramirez
Freshman; Computer Science major
ramirezfavian.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose the design because it was simple and pleasing to the eye. The rooster in the image is one of my roosters from back home. I found some of the for loops challenging because it would often try to access pixels outside of the image. The most rewarding part of the collage was fixing a very small error that just fixed everything"

"Butterflies" by Alex Bratek
Freshmen; Computer Science and Music Media Production majors
AlexBratek.jpg
Artist's statement: "A lot of my design choices for this collage were based on a love for symmetry and reflections. The way it is arranged pairs images that are opposite of each other and often modifies them in similar but opposing ways. The most challenging part of the collage was figuring out how to translate my conceptual ideas into code, especially when I had to troubleshoot errors from code that I thought was logically sound but was in fact missing some key logical component. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was when it finally came together properly towards the end. I kept running into issues with the code returning errors or not doing what I wanted it to, but when I finally ran the code and saw the complete collage as I wanted it to look, I was really excited and happy with the result."

"Athens" by Mordekai Bricker
Freshman; Computer Science major, Studio Art minor
MordekaiBricker.jpg
Artist's statement: "I based the design off of the Vaporwave aesthetic, A popular image in vaporwave is Greek statues edited to be placed on bright colors to balance futuristic and rustic designs. Coming up with what to do in the first place and planning it out was definitely a challenge. Seeing the finished product was very rewarding."

"My Cats" by Cristian Catalano
Freshman; Music Media Production major; Computer Science minor
CristianCatalano.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose the design because I love my cats. They're named Ginger (top) and Luna (bottom). The most challenging part was the initial placement of the images onto the empty canvas. The most rewarding part was watching the collage come together as I made it."

"Clock Towers" by Dean Crosby
Freshman; Computer Science major
DeanCrosby.jpg
Artist's statement: "I just liked the Big Ben photo and wanted to do something creative with it. The most challenging part was figuring out what changes I wanted to make to the original photo. The most rewarding part was seeing the collage finished and put together."

"Controlled Chaos" by Keegan Fontaine
Freshman; Computer Science major
KeeganFontaine.jpg
Artist's statement: "The idea was to create some kind of cool grid effect with a single image. I believe I achieved that, but it took a lot of time to figure out exactly what I wanted to do, and how to actually do it. The most challenging part about creating the collage was trying to find a dynamic way to apply the image effects. I wanted to make it easy to change out specific image effects and arguments -- almost treating them as if they are image filters in some kind of design software. The most rewarding part of creating my collage was the process about learning more about the Python programming language, specifically with some of Python's OOP concepts."

"City Scape" by Garrett Grim
Sophomore; Computer Science major
GarrettGrim.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose my collage to be designed how it was because I liked the image of the city and I also liked how I saw examples of people changing the colors of their images. The most challenging part was figuring out how to scale the images up or down. The most rewarding part was clicking the button and my code actually working and running how I wanted it to."
Supporting files
"Panda Colors" by Terry Moriarity
Freshman; Music Media Production major
TerryMoriarity.jpg
Artist's statement: "I wanted to do an image I liked and could change drastically in an easy way. I want people to know that it is much harder than it looks to code changes to a picture. Making sure your code actually works is challenging because I had many moments when my code was just not working and I didn’t know why. Finally seeing it come together even if it wasn’t the best, was still satisfying."

"Monotone Daisy" by Aaron Pharris
Freshman; Computer Science major
AaronPharris.jpg
Artist's statement: "I saw the daisy picture and thought it would be cool to make it gray colored in different segments. No special meaning just eye candy. Trying to get each segment to be colored differently and debugging it was challenging. The most rewarding thing about this project was it turning out exactly how I wanted it."

"Green Inverse" by Kali St. Julien
Sopomore; Economics major, Cybersecurity minor
KaliStJulien.jpg
Artist's statement: "I honestly started this project by just messing around with various different picture alteration functions. There was no particular reason for why I did anything, and it just evolved into this end result. I found it most challenging to get started and to do the pixel checker board effect on the top left picture. The most rewarding part was seeing the progress I made in learning the functions."

"Multidimensional" by Ishan Witanachchi
Freshman; Computer Science major
IshanWitanachchi.png
Artist's statement: "I wanted to explore the idea of different realities that a person could explore through. I hope people feel a sense of comfort when looking at it. Figuring out how to use the concepts we learned in CS 120 within the project bounds was tricky. Clicking the load program button and seeing everything appear is the most gratifying thing; you feel like your effort is worth it."
