BALL STATE UNIVERSITY
Spring 2021 CS 120: Computer Science 1
Sixteenth Semi-annual All-section Art Show
Sponsored by the Department of Computer Science

Live interaction with art show participants available via Zoom
on Friday, April 9, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Eastern)

The collages shown below were created by students in the CS 120 course, and judged by their peers to be the best in each section of the course. Although these could have been created using an image-editing program, these students have written the code themselves to create these collages programmatically by manipulating individual pixels.

This page displays the entries from this semester. You may view entries from all other semesters. All student work included in this and other shows, as well as many other CS 120 students' work is provided in an online digital media repository maintained by the BSU University Libraries.

"Four Corners" by Cameron Bandy
Sophomore; Computer Science major
bandycameron.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose this design because I wanted to be able to highlight all the different colors. The most challenging part of this was creating the blur function because I had to take the average of around 120 different pixels. The most rewarding part was seeing the final picture come together perfectly after waiting a while for it to load."

"Night Life" by Erika Dixon
Sophomore; Applied Mathematics major, Computer Science minor
dixonerika.jpg
Artist's statement: "I decided on this design because as I was drawing out the coordinates for my original idea (cookies on a cookie sheet), I noticed that the squares I drew that represented the cookies looked similar to windows on a building. I liked that idea better than my first one, so I went with it. The most challenging part of this collage was figuring out how to copy my original window image multiple times in order to add a different effect to it each time it was copied while keeping that original image intact. The most rewarding part was seeing all the pieces of it come together to have the collage program run how I wanted."

"Endless Waters" by Clare Endris
Sophomore; Visual Communications major, Computer Science, and Marketing minors
endrisclare.jpg
Artist's statement: "Perspective is something that really interests me and being able to alter and manipulate that for this project was something I wanted to do. The most challenging aspect for me was coming up with an alteration to a function so that it would be my own. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was being able to see the finished design and adding my signature."

"A Bale at the Beach" by Michael Taylor
Sophomore; Computer Science and Psychology majors
taylormichael.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose these pictures because I liked the childish drawing of the turtle, and turtles belong at the beach. The most challenging part of the collage was randomizing the turtles' locations. The most rewarding part was also being able to use randomization in the project."

"Touch of God" by Winston Fultz
Freshman; Computer Science major

Artist's statement: "I liked the design of multiple different colors cascading on the collage. Finding and creating the right dimensions for each box was the most challenging. The most rewarding part of the collage was the black and red posterizing."

"Groot 5x" by Ryan Schlechty
Sophomore; Computer Science major, Digital Forensics minor
schlechtyryan.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose the design of the collage this way because I thought it would look nice. After learning how to do all the different ways to change a picture, it was pretty cool to go back and pick things that I liked and combine them into this project. The most challenging part about creating this collage was scaling down my picture enough to fit onto the canvas and then getting each picture and the right spot. The most rewarding part of the collage was just seeing the final product of what I was making and seeing exactly what I thought the project would look like when complete."

"Incandescent" by Lindsay Bennett
Sophomore; Social Work major
bennettlindsay.jpg
Artist's statement: "This collage was inspired by a collage I made in a high school art class using magazine clippings and scrap pieces of paper. My collage did not impress my teacher at the time, but I always loved it and was proud of my work. The most challenging aspect was trying to create something that felt unique and would be something other people would not have thought to do. The most rewarding part was being comfortable enough with my code to the point where I could easily manipulate it to make any minor adjustments I thought to be necessary. The time I spent on it was definitely worthwhile as I created something that I am proud of and happy to share with others."

"Echoes of an Old Life" by Cameron Granger
Freshman; Computer Science major
grangercameron.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose the design because God of War is an amazing game and the Greek temples fit the aesthetic. The most challenging part was using the image of Kratos as a tint mask for the tiled temples. The most rewarding part was when I made the reference image from scratch and it actually worked out really well in the final collage."

"Unknxwn" by Matthew Dennison
Sophomore; Computer Science major
dennisonmatthew.jpg
Artist's statement: "When I started thinking about what I wanted to make, I decided to make a cool album cover, so I got one of my photographer friends to send me a cool picture and I did my best to create something that I like. The most challenging thing for me was creating a function to make the nine sections of the original image overlay in a grid over the collage. The most rewarding part of this collage was just seeing the final picture come out how I imagined it in my head."

"A matter of perspective" by Karim Mahfouz
Sophomore; Computer Science and Creative Writing majors
mahfouzkarim.jpg
Artist's statement: "When I first saw the image, I got the idea to mirror the paths and create an infinite optical illusion. However, the coloring itself started as a complete fluke when I forgot an equal sign. I changed the coloring around and thought that the mirroring between the original and the negative paralleled life: there is always two sides to a coin, nothing is all white nor all black. There are always multiple ways to look at a situation, but often times, reality is a mixture between all of them. It is just a matter of perspective. The most challenging aspect of making the collage was deciding on the final color combination. I made one that had a smoother gradient, but I decided on the sharper, more contrasting version. The most rewarding part was seeing the effect I created and building off it to get my end result."

"A Flight through Space" by Jalen Hart
Sophomore; Mathematics major
hartjalen.jpg
Artist's statement: "I wanted to make something space themed and nature themed because I enjoy both. The hardest part was definitely casting the butterfly onto the space background without losing the quality. Seeing the finished photo after many failed attempts was very satisfying and stress relieving."

"Palm reading" by Maxwell Rollo
Sophomore; Biology major, Computer Science minor
rollomaxwell.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose to make my collage like I did because I love color and weird/crazy things. When trying to find a picture to use for this project I wanted to choose one that would ne cool and funky after adding all of the picture effects. The most challenging part of the process was making sure all of the code worked together. With so much code it did not always all function together properly. The most rewarding part of the project was finishing it and being able to see how cool it looked after completion."

"Happy Hatch-Day Papaya!" by Andrew Rosenbrock
Freshman; Telecommunications (audio production) major, Computer Science minor
rosenbrockandrew.jpg
Artist's statement: "I was having a hard time finding a picture to use and I found inspiration in my bird turning one year older. The thing I found most challenging was fixing unexpected side effects of using so many different programs altering one object. One of the most rewarding parts of this creation was when I put my signature on the collage because I had no idea if my program would work but surprisingly it did."

"Charlotte" by Corinne Wenzel
Junior; Computer Information Systems major, Computer Science minor
wenzelcorinne.jpg
Artist's statement: "I chose my design because my late grandma loved butterflies. Her passing was tough on me, but I take comfort whenever I see a butterfly in my daily life because I feel like that is her way of checking on me and letting me know that she is still here with me. It only seemed natural to make a tribute to her. The most challenging part of creating the collage for me was deciding exactly how I wanted to manipulate the image I chose. Choosing the image was easy but finding a way to make it art while staying in the parameters of the project was challenging, albeit fun. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was seeing everyone else's designs and getting to vote on them. I just think it made it a lot more rewarding to be selected for the show. I wish everyone the best of luck!"
