BALL STATE UNIVERSITY
Fall 2017 CS 120: Computer Science 1
Ninth Semi-annual All-section Art Show
Sponsored by the Department of Computer Science

Held in the AJ Atrium on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM

The collages shown below were created by students in the CS 120 course, and judged by their peers to be the best in each section of the course. Although these could have been created using an image-editing program, these students have written the code themselves to create these collages programmatically by manipulating individual pixels.

This page displays the entries from this semester. You may view entries from all other semesters. All student work included in this and other shows, as well as many other CS 120 students' work is provided in an online digital media repository maintained by the BSU University Libraries.

"Black Magic" by Dan Beaver
Freshman; Computer Science major
beaverdan.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of this project was making a function that placed each edited photo onto the collage without editing over it multiple times. The most rewarding part of this project was being able to see the finished product hanging up on the wall."
"Holy Python, Batman!" by Michael Himes
Sophomore; Computer Science major
himesmichael.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging thing about creating this collage was taking my idea for the collage, along with my skill at coding, and trying to make them meet somewhere in the middle. My skills were too limited for many of my ideas. The most rewarding part of creating this collage was seeing the progress I had made from the beginning of the project, along with seeing a cool, practical use for the material I've learned."
"Mirrored Flight" by Valerie Sullivan
Senior; International Business major, Foundations of Computer Systems minor
sullivanvalerie.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most difficult part was lining up all of the copied items on the main canvas. Due to how straight the lines are in the pattern, any deviation from perfect symmetry will be distracting for the viewer. Creating a full program from a sketch was the most rewarding aspect for me because I was able to apply what I learned in class to an area that interests me."
"Taco Time" by Gavin Taskey
Freshman; Computer Science major
taskeygavin.jpg
Artist's statement: "Finding a good photo was challenging. The most rewarding part was the process of making it. I learned a lot and had fun doing it."
"The Internet" by Hunter Line
Freshman; Computer Science major, Computer Technology minor
linehunter.jpg
Artist's statement: "The hardest part for me was cleaning the code to simplify and remove repetitive lines. The most rewarding part of this collage creation is the beautiful outcome."
"We Don't Make Mistakes, Just Happy Little Accidents" by Hunter Wallace
Freshman; Computer Science major, Digital Forensics minor
wallacehunter.jpg
Artist's statement: "The hardest part, at first, was deciding where to start and what content we learned to utilize and make this project work. I’d say the most rewarding part was the final creation. As cheesy as it sounds, I really loved seeing the whole thing come together and seeing others laugh and smile at what I made. I had a blast with this project and can’t wait to continue my future in computer science."

"Giant Lizards on Earth" by Nick Ash
Sophomore; Marketing major, Information Systems minor
ash.jpg
Artist's statement: "My biggest challenges were incorporating my ideas into the functions, and making them work with one another. Seeing the final project and knowing that I programed all the changes to the photos was very rewarding."
"Desert Mirage" by Noah Connolly
Sophomore; Oboe Performance, and Computer Science majors
connolly.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most difficult aspect of my collage was figuring out how to make the inside of the picture chromakeyed for the starry sky. The most rewarding part was getting the chromakey to work and creating a really cool effect. Seeing the final product was worth the hours it took to get it to work."
"Good Boy" by Evan Knapke
Freshman; Computer Science major
knapke.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part about creating my collage was coming up with an idea in my head to try to create. The most rewarding part was getting to learn and experiment more with picture manipulation through JES."
"Spiraling Towers" by Eli Sokeland
Freshman; Computer Science major, Strategic Communications minor
sokeland.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of my collage was editing my photo multiple times without permanently changing the source photo. The most rewarding part of my creation was making the collage very symmetrical."
"Playful Kittens" by Riley Settler
Freshman; Computer Science major
stetler.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of my collage was making sure it only applied to one picture and not all of the others. The most rewarding part was seeing the result. I felt like it turned out very well. At first I wasn't sure if it would look better with just shrinking it down 5 times. I then felt that it looked better with it being shrunk down 9 times."
"Vaporwave" by Aaron Whitfield
Senior; Computer Technology major, Computer Security, and Business Administration minors
whitfield.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part was figuring out what effects I should do to the icons on the top half of the collage. Finding the pattern and arrangement that looked the best took a long time. The most rewarding experience was completing the code that added the 'vaporwave'-like filter/gradient on the collage. I think going from Orange to Pink was an excellent choice to add the vaporwave aesthetic."

"Different Sides of Zelda" by Kelsi Goshinsky
Freshman; Chemistry major
goshinsky.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of the collage creation was figuring out what I wanted to do for this piece. Getting the program to run flawlessly was the most rewarding."
"Shades of Earth" by Phillip Ingalls
Senior; Computer Science, and Astronomy majors
ingalls.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of this project was figuring out how to layer the Chroma key properly so that it would copy the earth images without the black background anywhere I wanted on the star canvas. After the Chroma key function was solved, everything pretty much fell into place. I love the symmetry of the collage, and how with only minor tweaking, any comparable image can be inserted in place of the Earth simply by calling a different image."
"Psychedelic" by Denise Jacquez
Freshman; Spanish, and Japanese majors, Computer Science minor
jacquez.jpg
Artist's statement: "I had a tough time finding a starting point. I knew the basics, but I struggled to find a good collage idea. I had many ideas, but I didn't find any of them 'fun.' I also had a lot of trouble copying the pictures in the exact position I wanted. I wanted the collage to be hard to look at; that way, it would force viewers to take a closer look and pay attention to the details. I'm glad it turned out as 'trippy' as I imagined."
"Back to the Future" by Jared Ripley
Freshman; Computer Science major
ripley.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part when creating my collage was definitely when using the scale function to size down all of the different pictures on the canvas. The most rewarding part of the collage project was being able to learn more about code and how to use it when dealing with a big project."
"T(a)inted Trump" by Ryan Sims
Freshman; Computer Science major, Computer Technology minor
sims.jpg
Artist's statement: "I found the hardest part of coding this project was figuring out how to get the pictures created by my for loop to be tiled onto the canvas. The most rewarding part was seeing how well the original picture overlaid onto the tiled pictures and how well it came together."
"Division" by Alexandra Weinert
Senior; Applied Mathematics major, German language minor
weinert.jpg
Artist's statement: "I found getting all of the sections of the collage to line up the most challenging part. Definitely the most rewarding part of this project was finally getting everything in my code to work just right."
"A Seasoned Scene" by Chris Wilson
Freshman; Computer Science major
wilson.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most difficult obstacle I had to overcome while programming my collage was making sure that both the Chroma key and random scaling/placing functions for the trees didn't cause the program to error. The most satisfying part of this collage was finally creating a procedurally generated picture consistently, fully completing without error."

"Differing Moons" by Chris Bucker
Freshman; Computer Science major, Mathematics minor
bucker.jpg
Artist's statement: "For the many colored moon I found it difficult to keep the colors on the moon instead of the background. The most rewarding part would have to be when the whole piece was put together."
"Life Through the Lens of Code" by Hailey Carlson
Freshman; Computer Science major, Communication Studies and Spanish minors
carlson.png
Artist's statement: "The most challenging thing was deciding which pictures to use, in what order, and where each image modification should go on the final canvas. The most rewarding part was realizing that half of my indecisiveness was because of the number of modification options I had available because of how much I've learned, then seeing the final collage come together like I envisioned."
"Shrubbery" by Nathaniel Moore
Sophomore; Criminal Justice and Criminology major, Computer Science minor
moore.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part for me was figuring out how do the corners of the background properly. I was having trouble filling them in properly at first, as making a triangle essentially out of a lot of lines was a bit strange, but I eventually figured out how to do it the way I had wanted. The most rewarding part for me was how the pictures came together much more smoothly in the end. I initially was stymied as the pictures wouldn't fit on the canvas effectively without there being a lot of awkward blank space, but I think the background that I used made it all come together rather nicely."
"Matrix Breakdown" by Justin Russell
Freshman; Computer Science major, Music Theory minor
russell.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of this collage for me had to be deciding where I would want to put my signature and what color scheme I essentially wanted to go with at the beginning of the collage. One of the most rewarding parts of the collage creation was being able to finally see the end result I had envisioned in the beginning, and having the relief that it turned out how I wanted it to be."
"Negative Space" by Jordan Shanahan
Sophomore; Computer Science major
shanahan.jpg
Artist's statement: "Scaling the pictures correctly and placing them onto the canvas was the most challenging. The artistic feel to the collage was most rewarding for me."

"Continuity" by Will English
Freshman; Computer Science major, Computer Technology minor
Will_English.png
Artist's statement: "What I found most challenging is when I tried to scale down my image without looking anything up. That ties into what I found rewarding: even though I did get some help from the book, I still had the right ideas on how to scale."
"Jellyfish" by Jaden Drury
Freshman; Computer Science major
JadenDrury.png
Artist's statement: "The most difficult part about the collage was adding the signature. The examples in the book didn’t work with how the rest of my project was formatted. Also, I had several instances of the code I was experimenting with messing with the color of the rest of the pictures unintentionally. Getting to experiment with code in several different ways and seeing them all work together as they were intended was rewarding."
"Random Bits" by Nathan Peterson
Senior; Computer Science major
Nathan_Petersen.png
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of creating the collage was learning how to take an image and place it on a blank canvas pixel by pixel. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was watching as my canvas went from blank space to a work of art, and knowing each time that I ran the program I would get a unique collage back."
"Bravery in the Unknown" by Julian Price
Freshman; Computer Science major, Mathematics minor
Julian_Price.png
Artist's statement: "What I found most challenging about creating the collage was getting all the pictures to appear together, in the right locations. The most rewarding part was learning how to think differently."
