BALL STATE UNIVERSITY
Fall 2016 CS 120: Computer Science 1
All-section Art Show
Sponsored by the Department of Computer Science

Held in the AJ Atrium on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM

The collages shown below were created by students in the CS 120 course, and judged by their peers to be the best in each section of the course. Although these could have been created using an image-editing program, these students have written the code themselves to create these collages programmatically by manipulating individual pixels.

This page displays the entries from this semester. You may view entries from all other semesters. All student work included in this and other shows, as well as many other CS 120 students' work is provided in an online digital media repository maintained by the BSU University Libraries.

"Gaman" by Ena Brkovic
Senior; Biology major (Concentration in Genetics), Japanese minor
ebrkovic.jpg
Artist's statement: "What I found most challenging about creating this collage was finding non-copyrighted images that I felt suited the theme I was trying to put together. I wanted it to be simple, yet have intricate details that I could work with given the limited knowledge I have of coding. I found that the most rewarding part was looking back at the experience. I feel much more comfortable with the coding than I did in the beginning."
"Shades of the Cranebow" by Kinley Eads
Sophomore; Computer Science major, Entrepreneurial Management minor
keads.jpg
Artist's statement: "I found the hardest part to be either choosing an image or deciding how to use the functions to change the picture. Seeing the final, complete print-out of the project was the most rewarding part."
"Wolf Wave in Space" by Kevin Gonzalez
Sophomore; Computer Science major
kgonzalez.jpg
Artist's statement: "What I found the most challenging about this was trying to make sure the corners of the inner images were somewhat aligned with the outer ones. There was a lot of trial and error making this work. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was seeing it finished after so much trial an error. Especially when it is my YouTube channel’s logo!"
"Octopus" by Casey Noll
Junior; Mathematical Sciences major
cenoll.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part about creating this collage was finding a way to correctly isolate the design in order to change the color how I wanted. The most rewarding part was overcoming the complications mentioned previously, and seeing the first color successfully placed in the area that I wanted."
"Edison" by Bryce Sigsbee
Sophomore; Computer Science major
btsigsbee.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part for me was actually deciding how I wanted to lay out the canvas. I had to decide if I wanted to add some secondary pictures or just use one image to edit. The most rewarding part was seeing my thought process going from just a thought to something physical."

"Stardust" by Anonymous
Status and major withheld by request
h.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of the collage was removing the background color from the planets to make sure that I still saw the star field in the background. The most rewarding part was getting all the planets so that their alterations were displayed best."
"Different Forms of a Mouse" by Amber King
Freshman; Computer Science major, Theatrical Studies major, French minor
aking.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part about creating the collage was trying to figure out where exactly to place all the copies of the image so it can fit the canvas. The most rewarding part was the opportunity to learn how to use my creativity in a way that I’ve never done before."
"JACKSKELLINGTONsofcolours" by Jacob Knoll
Freshman; Computer Science major
jknoll.jpg
Artist's statement: "What I found most challenging about my collage was adding my signature exactly where I wanted it to be and in what color I wanted. I found the final product the most rewarding. It was a very nice feeling to see everything come together how I wanted it to from just one original picture and some code."
"Tick Tock" by Isaac McKinney
Freshman; Computer Science major
imckinney.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of creating the collage was figuring out how to rotate an image in increments smaller than 90 degrees. The most rewarding part was realizing how useful it can be to apply something I have learned outside of Computer Science, in this case trig, to my code."
"Multi-Verse" by Matthew Taylor
Freshman; Computer Science major
mtaylor.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of this project was getting my signature on the image. I had to upload multiple pictures of my signature because there was not enough lighting and had to go through the process of altering the code multiple times so all of my signature would show up. The most rewarding aspect of this project was having the image load up for the first time. As a freshman with minimal background in coding and computer science, there were many bugs at first and troubleshooting was a struggle so seeing that image pop up was the most rewarding aspect about this project."

"Looking Through the Wall" by Lakin Lane
Freshman; Computer Science major
lklane.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part was scaling the pictures to just the right size. Seeing the final product was the most rewarding."
"Windows" by Seth Northern
Senior; Accounting major, Computer Science minor
ssnorthern.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part was writing the copy functions for the scaled images. The most rewarding part of this code was understanding how to effectively arrange the images."
"A Colorful Campus Day" by Ian Pemberton
Freshman; Creative Writing major, Computer Science minor
iapemberton.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging aspect of the collage was adding on the signature of my name at the bottom-right corner. Two things were rewarding: feeling competent about programming (like solving a puzzle), and seeing the final image."
"Windows to the Mind" by Bradley Shrader
Freshmen; Computer Science major, Physics major, Mathematics minor
bkshrader.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of creating my collage was finding a way to make so many random factors not only work together but also look good reliably. The most rewarding part of the project for me was using it as an opportunity to vastly expand my knowledge of the python language."
"Solar System" by Brad Snurka
Sophomore; Computer Technology major, Business Administration minor, Computer Security minor, Information Systems minor
bsnurka.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of creating the collage was getting the scales of all the planets right. My random star creation function was rewarding to create."

"Trippen Llama" by Austin Bolles
Sophomore; Computer Science major
abolles.jpg
Artist's statement: "Getting the source file to actually accept the given function (it didn’t like it at all) was rewarding."
"The Ares System" by Jacob Carter
Sophomore; Criminal Justice major, Criminology major, Computer Science minor
jcarter.jpg
Artist's statement: "The hardest part of creating this collage was getting only the planets in the collage without their backgrounds, it took a ridiculously long line of code to get that to work. The most rewarding part was seeing the final collage get printed exactly the way I hoped it would come out."
"City of Glass" by Nicolas Egierski
Freshman; Computer Science major, Military Science minor
negierski.jpg
Artist's statement: "I found the most challenging part for me was making the checkered board of small pictures go all the way up until the edge. It was easy to make the scaled picture repeat throughout the canvas, but I encountered problems when the pictures would try and run over the side of the canvas. The most rewarding aspect of this project was when all of my code ran successful for the first time. I spent a lot of time creating, testing, and experimenting with the functions I made, and when it finally ran without error I had an immense sense of accomplishment."
"Kullarifärg" by Isaiah Schevola
Freshman; Computer Science major, Filmography minor, Photography minor
ischevola.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of the experience was finding the right way to modify the colors. The most rewarding part was seeing my own photography in a new form."
"Dog Who Walks Sometimes" by Evan Witous
Freshman; Computer Science major, Telecommunications major
witous.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part was writing the code in a way that allowed me to change the size of the pictures and have it still work. The most rewarding part of the process was getting to see my idea come to life, and getting to be proud of it."

"Vertigo" by Cody Asher
Freshman; Computer Science major, Scuba minor
casher.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of the collage was coming up with the idea. Learning different ways to use code and functions to create effects was rewarding."
"Dear John" by Richard Crandall
Senior; Computer Technology major, Business minor
rpcrandall.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part about the collage for me was choosing an image that I liked but also felt like I could creatively modify. The most rewarding part of was realizing how much fun coding could actually be."
"Black Materia" by Zach Dummer
Sophomore; Computer Technology major, Business Administration minor
zddummer.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part when making this collage was trying to find a place to start. I ended up writing all the functions I knew and could use for the collage and just kept testing them out and seeing what happened. I got to a point where I had a rough idea of what my collage could look like. I then realized that my vision could be created and that had to be the most satisfying moment while working on this collage. After this realization I was able to do many minor tweaks to the design to finally get it the way I wanted it which ended up being incredibly enjoyable."
"Nocturne" by Marston Miller
Junior; Actuarial Science major, Foundations of Business minor
mcmiller.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of the collage was finding a picture I liked to work with. The most rewarding part was the opportunity to explore my creativity."
"Rise of the Phoenix" by Joe Overton
Freshman; Computer Science major
jooverton.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of creating the collage was changing the pictures in a way that was significant without losing the definition of the image. The most rewarding part of creating the collage was seeing the finished product and feeling like I had overcome a difficult problem."
"Renaissance Mouse" by Jordan Reidy
Sophomore; Computer Science major
jareidy.jpg
Artist's statement: "Finding the proper balance of editing the original art work while also keeping it intact. Seeing it all come together in one click and knowing that it's done through code. It was interesting to know that something like this could be done automatically without me having to direct the affects to the original image."
"Water in the Monitor" by Tanner Stanley
Junior; Computer Science major
tdstanley.jpg
Artist's statement: "I found that the hardest part was setting up a program for the background. The most rewarding part was seeing it at the end."
