BALL STATE UNIVERSITY
Fall 2013 CS 120: Computer Science 1
All-section Art Show
Sponsored by the Department of Computer Science

Held in the AJ Atrium on Friday, November 8, 2013, from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM

The collages shown below were created by students in the CS 120 course, and judged by their peers to be the best in each section of the course. Although these could have been created using a PhotoShop-like program, these students have written the code themselves to create these collages programmatically by manipulating individual pixels.

This page displays the entries from this semester. You may view entries from all other semesters. All student work included in this and other shows, as well as many other CS 120 students' work is provided in an online digital media repository maintained by the BSU University Libraries.

"Chaotic Dimensions" by Andrew Rhine
Freshman; Computer Science major
Andrew_Rhine_collage.jpg
Artist's statement: "Deciding on an appropriate image size was the most challenging. Seeing how the functions interact with one another was very rewarding."
"Yin-Yang" by Brandon Groff
Freshman; Computer Science major, Computer Technology minor
Brandon Groff_Project.jpg
Artist's statement: "My biggest challenge was creating the image I had imagined. I found it rewarding to finally getting everything as I’d pictured it."
"Show down" by Bryce Raines
Sophomore; Computer Science major
Bryce Raines_collage.jpg
Artist's statement: "I found getting all the pieces modified right was the most challenging. The experience of coding has been rewarding. Before this class I would never code anything like this."

"Okami" by Abby Duvanenko
Sophomore; Computer Science major
Abby Duvanenko_Project.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging thing about this collage was planning it out. I didn't know what image I wanted to modify and what modifications I would do to that picture. Some of the coding was a bit off from what I wanted, so that was a bit challenging as well. The most rewarding part of the collage was actually getting all of it to work. I didn't think I would actually get it done on time."
"Buikema Collage" by Brandon Buikema
Freshman; Computer Science major
Brandon Buikema_Project.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging thing about creating the collage was making the penguin partially invisible. The finished product was the most rewarding."
"Dragon in the midst of fire" by Chris Shilson
Junior; Computer Science major
Chris Shilson_collage.jpg
Artist's statement: "Finding pictures that worked well together was a challenge. Changing colors was challenging because I kept picking the wrong parameters. I was able to test my knowledge thus far of programming. I got a cool new background for my computer as well."
"Computer Programming in its Primal State" by Don Adamson
Freshman; Computer Science major
Don Adamson_Project.jpg
Artist's statement: "Creating functions that weren't in the book or spelled out on the Internet was a challenge. I had an immense sense of accomplishment when overcoming challenges."
"Pre-season skiing" by Josh Scholten
Freshman; Actuarial Science major, Computer Science minor
Josh Scholten_Project.jpg
Artist's statement: "Mirroring the picture twice to create the bottom right image was challenging. After finding an image on a skiing forum, I found it rewarding to message the user and get permission for use."
"Glitch" by Lauren Taylor
Freshman; Computer Science major, Digital Media minor
Lauren_Taylor_Collage.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part was going through my code and correcting mistakes, as well as changing the concept for my picture in the middle of the process. The best part of this project was seeing the possibilities that Jython had to make the picture my own."
"" by Sam Bruns
Freshman; Computer Science major
Sam Bruns_collage.jpg
Artist's statement: "I think the hardest part of this collage project was coming up with an idea of what to make. I like music so i just decided to incorporate album artwork into my project. The most rewarding part of the collage creation was being able to create something cool with coding."

"The Crux" by Andrew Bunton
Freshman; Computer Science major
AndrewBunton.jpg
Artist's statement: "I found it hard to get those bars correctly positioned. I love the overall effect, and the combinations of the various effects to produce a single, interesting image."
"Cloud of Color" by Dante Payne
Freshman; Computer Science major, Graphic Arts & Theatre minors
DantePayne.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging thing about creating the collage was making everything symmetrical within the picture and also structuring it so that the gray scale and negative look different. Also having the codes effect each copy individually rather than compounding it. Seeing the finished project and the fact that I was able to create something like this was the most rewarding."
"New York" by Maeleen Taylor
Junior; Architecture major, Computer Science & History minors
MaeleenTaylor.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging aspect was writing and altering the code so my collage looked exactly how I wanted it to. The most rewarding was seeing the finished product."
(Based on the TM logo designed by Milton Glaser in 1977 and held by the State of New York.)
"London Light and Color" by Mathew Kalkhoff
Senior; Meteorology & Japanese majors
MathewKalkhoff.jpg
Artist's statement: "Consistently testing the code for validation and correct visual effects was challenging. Understanding more about computer codes, seeing I still had some artistic talent, and knowing as an older undergraduate student that I can still create wondrous things was rewarding."
"Droplets" by Rider Adkins
Freshman; Computer Science major
RiderAdkins.jpg
Artist's statement: "Trying to make the water drops a different color such as pink was a challenge, but it didn’t work out like I wanted to so I had to back off. Making one of the leaves a hint of purple by jumbling the pixel values was rewarding."
"ERMAHGERD" by Sean Dunaway
Freshman; Computer Science & Entrepreneurship majors
SeanDunaway.jpg
Artist's statement: "The most challenging part of the collage would have to be setting the rotated pictures in the right places and also including the chroma key of my signature on the bottom right. To visualize what I wanted in my head and actually see it come to life, all using programming, was most rewarding."
