Team WebCoPS is currently working on a software project which will allow
Ball State University students, in the
Computer Science and
Mathematical Sciences curricula, to create automatically generated schedules to fit their needs.
The software will also be used by faculty advisors to help them advise students on when and what courses to take, and will also help each department get a clearer picture of student needs when it comes to course offerings. This information will come in the form of both usage statistics, and surveys conducted on the students.
Students will be able to customize their schedules by selecting preferential courses and by providing the number of credit hours per semester they would like to take and total number of semesters they would like until they graduate. Students will also be able to save their schedules so that they can view or modify them later.
Advisors will be able to look at the schedules their advisees have saved and can e-mail the student to tell them what they think (if the student wishes). Advisors will also be able to create schedules for their advisees to review.
Team WebCoPS will be using PHP as the primary programming language in this project, along with MySQL, which will be used in conjunction with PHP to handle actions performed on the database. The team is currently refining a Goal-Seeking Algorithm (GSA) which will generate the best-suited schedules for students based on the criteria provided.
