National company to headquarter in Muncie

Brevini to manufacture gear drive applications starting in 2011

The present
Brevini Power Transmission, which has been manufacturing gear drive units for various applications since the 1960s, plans to move its U.S. headquarters to Muncie. The Muncie plant will manufacture planetary gear boxes for wind turbine energy generation and other applications. The company predicts the new manufacturing complex will provide jobs for 450 people.

The initial move will be to an existing 60,000-square-foot building in the Delaware County Park One Industrial Park. The plan also involves construction of a new 150,000 square foot building in 2010. The buildings will house the design and manufacturing portions of the company.

Brevini will be provided with tax breaks and grants from Indiana as a result of the move to Muncie. According to www.tradeandindustrydev.com, the the Indiana Economic Development Corporation "offered Brevini up to $3.9 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $300,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans." The company would also receive support from Delaware County in the form of a 20-acre site for the facility and property tax breaks.

The company
Brevini focuses on three ideas in everything it does: Ruggedness, compactness and strength. The words describe the goal for all of the gear drive units the company makes. All told, Brevini produces more than 500 drives that are used in a variety of industries — everything from manufacturing to clean energy.

The company moved to the United States from Italy in the 1970s. The company provides service and parts to the entire country with a network of sales engineers and distributors. The system allows the Brevini products to be taken into any area they are needed quickly.

The company is also committed to using local suppliers and workers for its manufacturing process. Shafts, housings, bearings and various other fabrications all come from local sources. Currently, Brevini builds most of its gearboxes from the ground up in Chicago so delivery times are short.

Most of Brevini's gearboxes are planetary and can be used with hydraulic and electric motors. These motors and gearboxes are typically found in low speed, high torque applications similar to wind turbines. The gearboxes can also be used in thickeners, agitators, mixers, feeder conveyors and slewing drives.

The reason Brevini focuses on planetary gear manufacturing is because it has the highest torque to weight ratio of any type. When it comes to producing torque in any application these are the most important factors. The company also strives to manufacture versatile systems that can be used in many different applications.

Brevini will be the first company in Indiana to focus on wind-energy related manufacturing in Indiana.
