This course focuses on basic concepts of database systems and relational models. The relational database language SQL will be discussed along with ORACLE SQL Plus. The main contents consist of Data Modeling (E-R Model, Enhanced E-R Model, and UML Model), Record Storage and File Organizations, Relational Data Model and Relational Algebra, and SQL. For Oracle system, each student will be assigned an account and the topics include the following:
Basic SQL, PL/SQL Programming Language Basics, Cursors and Exceptions, Procedures, Functions, Packages, Embedded SQL in Java, JDBC connection, internet connection JSP.
Many example programs (in SQL, PL/SQL, JSP, Java) will be given and discussed in the class.
Prerequisites: CS232.
Three to four projects will be given in the class, which may include ER schema diagram, SQL, PL/SQL, SQL*Loader, JSP, Embedded SQL in Java, JDBC connection. (Penalty of delay will be 5% for each day.)
Tests: three tests (50 % of the final grade).
Final grade: the letter grade will depend on the following standard (plus and minus will be adjusted accordingly).
