You can query the WHOIS database on several different kinds of information:

Network addresses, such as "147.226" (just two bytes for a class B address)
Domain names, such as "bsu.edu" (just the second level domains are registered, so cs.bsu.edu won't work)
Contact personell, such as "Buis" (some guy in the old country and some body else in Indiana)
Detailed information on abbreviated names shown in parenthesis for crossreferncing from the results of other queries.
