Grade Level - 4^th

Materials:
    -A box of K'nex
    -String
    -Film canister
    -Paper
    -Pencil
    -Water
    -Scissors

Objective:
Student will test how the pendulum changes when variables are altered and record the data on a piece of paper. The students will write a summary page over the results.

Motivation:
Show a video on how pendulum work.

Input:

• Divide the class into groups of two.
•  Hand out K'nex and instruct student how to create a pendulum.
• To build a pendulum the students needs to make a solid base and an area above for the           string to swing.
•  Refer to picture for ideas.
• Give the students a film canister and string. Explain how to connect the film canister and            string to the structure by tying a knot.
• Have students follow the chart below for variable change.

 

	String length	Amount of water
Trial one	One inch from bottom	1/4, 1/2, 3/4 full
Trial two	Two inches from bottom	1/4, 1/2, 3/4 full
Trial three	Three inches from bottom	1/4, 1/2, 3/4 full

• Students will judge the speed and number of swings per 30 seconds. Student will judge speed  by dividing the number of swings by 30 seconds.
• Students will then record the data on a piece of paper.
• Have students write a one-page summary of the results.

Closure:
Groups will show their pendulum to the rest of the class and share their results.

Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on their design, completion of the data sheet, and the paper.  A rubric will be estabished for the paper.
