                     Insect Lesson Plan
                                            Grade Level: 3rd

Intro:  Peak students' interests in insects by showing many photos of common
insects.  Ask students if they recognize any of the insects shown.  If recognized,
ask the children the name of the insect and name parts that are visible.

Objectives:  Students will be able to list basic characteristics of insects. (i.e.
six legs, antennae, eyes, mandibles, thorax, head and abdomen)
Students will be able to  identify three common insects.
Students will be able to successfully construct the toy insect.

Procedure:  The teacher will identify the photos of insects previously shown,
pointing out specific parts of the insects body. (six legs, antennae, eyes,
mandibles, thorax, head and abdomen)  Next, the teacher will split the
students into groups and supply them with K'nex  and let them practice
connecting pieces.  After ten minutes, the teacher will hand out directions to
build a K'nex  insect.  The students will then attempt to make the insect, if
they have any problems the teacher will be there for assistance.  After the
insects are made the students will be asked to identify parts that are on their
insects.

Evaluation:   1.  Teacher will observe and see if the groups successfully made
                           their insects.
                      2.  When observing the products, the teacher will ask each group
to list and identify parts of the insect.
                      3.  At the end of the lesson, teacher will ask students to name
                           three common insects.
