Section 4
K'nex Science Lesson Plan

Objectives:

1.  The students will infer that the same
materials can be used in different way.

2.  The students will find multiple ways to solve
     building design challenges.

3.  The students will experiment with different
ways to build self-supporting and sturdy
     structures.

      Procedure:

      1.  The students will select any 12 rods and connectors and put them into
           a pile.

      2.  Have the students make another pile of exactly the same pieces.

      3.  Using one set of peices have the students maky anything they choose.

      4.  Let the students use their imagination to come up with soemthing new.

      5.  Have the students use the other set of pieces to build something as
different as possible from the first structure.

      6. Now have the students choose two sets of 12 rods and connectors,
each set with the same pieces.  Make is stand up and as tall as
          possible.

      7.  With the other set make somethng new as wide as possible.  (stand
           up)

      8. Have the children think of what their bridge will cross over and who
          will travel on the bridge.

Evaluation:
    1. Allow the students to show and describe their first structure to

    2. the class.
    3. Have the students compare how they made their tall and wide structures stand up. Did they have to use more pieces for support in the tall structure?
    4. Help them infer that each design has different building requirements, even if the materials are the same.
