K'NEX
Grade:  Second
Time: 1 hour
Lesson:  Construction of a K'NEX ramp, and testing balls
Materials:  K'NEX set, pictures of ramps, chart, whiffle ball, tennis ball, ping-pong ball, rubber ball, and plastic ball.
Context:  The context of this lesson is using science and technology to construct ramps using a K'NEX set, and test balls going down the ramps.

Challenge:  After distributing a K'NEX set to the students and giving them time to look at and discuss, the students will be challenged to create a ramp using the K'NEX set suitable to race balls down.  The students will be given a variety of balls in which they will find which ones go fast and which ones go slow.  Subject Areas:  Construction and Science

Reasources:  K'NEX set, www.ezramps.com/, www.ezramps.com/ramps2.htm#eznramps.

Objectives:
  • The students will be able to build a ramp using K'NEX pieces and the pictures.
  • The students will be able to use thier knowledge of the different balls and predict which ones will go the fastest to slowest.
  • The students will be able to predict what will happen to the balls at the ramps different heights.
Procedure:
  • Give the students the K'NEX pieces that they will need to use to build a ramp and pictures of different ramps that they can use for this lesson.
  • Place students in groups of three to four and allow students to build a ramp with K'NEX pieces.
  • Allow students to share their ramps with the class.
  • Give each group the set of balls and allow them to test their balls and predict which ones will go down the ramp the fastest.
  • Have each group record their results.
  • Share results as a class and proceed to make a chart of which ball w
