Building Your Computer for $3000

Several computer hardware vendors offer Web sites where you may design your own computer system by choosing the processor and accessories that will be custom built for you. After you have chosen from a list of options, you will be told the price of the configuration that you have designed and allowed to order it directly via e-mail on the Web. To design an Intel/Windows system, there are many vendors:

  • Gateway
  • Compact
  • Dell
    • For example, Gateway has a nice site. (Gateway 2000 (http://www.gw2k.com). It is like a shopping cart, where you pick and choose and a page comes up with a total configuration. All I ask is that you stick to the home use models. The Enterprise models would be too expensive anyway. If you chose, you can also do this for the Macintosh clones. Apple's site is www.apple.com.

    Remember you only have $3000 to spend. Make the most of your money. Hand in a print out of your choices. This print can be the generated web site form (most have Build Your Own Computers page), or you can type it in a Word document. With the the printed quote, provide a short explanation (rational) for your choices. Put this in a Word document.

    This project is worth 25 lecture points. Please hand this assignment to your lab instructor in lab 6.
