Professor Mir Masoom Ali whose excellence as a
student of statistics is recognized all over the world has
presented over seventy invited and contributed papers at
national and international conferences, meetings and
colloquia in such countries as the U. S. A., Canada, The
Netherlands, France, Mexico, India and Bangladesh and has
had the rare honour of chairing some of these national and
international conferences and workshops and in these his
quality as a leader and his ability as an organizer were
much appreciated. He is one of the co-founders of the
Midwest Biopharmaceutical Statistics Workshop which is one
of the longest running statistical conferences in the U. S. A. and is co-sponsored by the American Statistical
Association. Professor Ali who has ostensibly been very
active in statistical organizations was elected President of
the newly founded North America Bangladesh Statistical
Association (1989-91), President of the Indiana Chapter of
the American Statistical Association (1989-90, 1990-91),
Vice-President of the Indiana Chapter of the ASA (1988-89),
Member of the Committee on Minorities in Statistics, ASA
(1988-90), Representative of the ASA Council of Chapters
(1990, 1991).
Professor Masoom Ali who serves on the editorial
boards of four statistical journals of repute has had the
honour of refereeing many papers for a wide range of
national and international journals of statistics.
Dr. Masoom Ali who is Professor of Statistics
at Ball State University, U. S. A. was the recipient of
the Ball State University Outstanding Researcher Award,
1984-85, which carried a cash award of $1000 along with a
plaque. He also received the Meritorious Service Award,
1987, for his role in the Midwest Biopharmaceutical
Statistics Workshops. Professor Ali has been actively
involved in developing academic programmes for his
University and has dedicated himself in such academic duties
as directing graduate theses and performing research
consulting, which won him recognition for twenty years
service by Ball State University and the award included a
plaque. It was largely owing to his academic excellence and
his impeccable reputation as a scholar of Statistics that
Professor Ali was elected Fellow of the Royal Statistical
Society, U. K. He has recently been elected Fellow of the
Institute of Statisticians, U. K. He has also been elected
a member of the International Statistical Institute.
Professor Masoom Ali who is an expatriate living in the United States was born in Bangladesh on February 1, 1937. He was educated at the Universities of Dhaka and Toronto. He received his Ph. D. from the University of Toronto in 1969. Though Professor Ali has been away from his native land for a long time, he cherishes very warm and intimate feelings for his country of birth and his people. He maintains personal contact with statistical programmes in Bangladesh through his visiting appointments at both Dhaka and Jahangirnagar Universities. He also serves on the editorial boards of statistical journals published from these Universities. He was instrumental to many Bangladeshi students getting placement and financial assistance in American and Canadian Universities. In his capacity as the President of the North America Bangladesh Statistical Association he is trying to project the contribution of Professor Qazi Motahar Husain abroad. Having taken all these into consideration and having recognized the academic excellence of Professor Masoom Ali as a scholar of Statistics, Bangladesh Statistical Association is pleased to award the Qazi Motahar Husain Gold Medal to him who henceforth will be recognized as the first recipient of this award launched by Bangladesh Statistical Association in 1990.
