MUNCIE, Ind. -- A Ball State University statistics professor has been elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association for contributions to the statistical profession.
Mir Masoom Ali, a member of the Ball State faculty for 30 years, was honored by the organization at its recent meeting in Dallas, Texas.
"My election is a tremendous honor for Ball State University, the mathematical sciences department and myself," Ali said. "I think it says something about the quality of Ball State when I was one of only 58 of the 20,000 members worldwide elected as fellows."
Ali was cited for his contributions to finite sampling methods and estimation based upon optimal spacing of order statistics; outstanding teaching and creation of degree programs in statistics; contributing to the initiation and ongoing support of the Midwest Biopharmaceutical Statistics Workshop; and for international editorial work.
The American Statistical Association, founded in Boston in 1839, is one of the country's oldest professional organizations. Among the members elected to fellowship level were faculty from the universities of Chicago, Michigan, Rice, Stanford, Columbia, Brown, Rutgers, UCLA, Toronto and Yale.
Ali has published more than 100 professional papers, presented approximately 100 speeches, and received 30 research grants. He is a past recipient of Ball State's Outstanding Faculty Researcher and Outstanding Faculty awards. Ali was also the first recipient of Bangladesh Statistical Association Gold Medal Award for outstanding statistical contributions. He is also editor, associate editor and editorial board member of seven international statistical journals.
Ali received his master's degree and doctorate from the University of Toronto. He also served as a government statistician for 12 years in Pakistan before the creation of Bangladesh.
